Hantavirus
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide. Infection with any hantavirus can produce hantavirus disease in people. Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as “New World” hantaviruses and may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Other hantaviruses, known as “Old World” hantaviruses, are found mostly in Europe and Asia and may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Each hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host species and is spread to people via an aerosolized virus that is shed in urine, faeces, and saliva, and less frequently by a bite from an infected host. The most important hantavirus in the United States that can cause HPS is the Sin Nombre virus, spread by the deer mouse.
The case of coronavirus has grown to over 4 lakh worldwide over 18 thousand people have died. Meanwhile China's state media Global times reports that a person from Yunnan province died while on his way back to Shandong province for work on a Chartered Bus on Monday. He was tested positive for Hantavirus other 32 people on the bus were tested.
How It spreads
The disease is not airborne and can only to people if they come in contact with urine, faeces and saliva of rodents and less frequently by a bite from an infected host.
Mortality Rate
Early symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever and muscle aches, along with headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems. If left untreated it can lead to coughing and shortness of breath and can be fatal with the mortality rate of 38% according to CDC.
No person to person spread
HPS can't be passed on from person to person, while HFRS transmission between people is extremely rare.
As per the CDC, rodent population control is the primary strategy for preventing hantavirus infection.
How did it get the name?
Hantavirus is named for the Hantan river area in South Korea where an early outbreak was observed and was isolated in 1976 by Ho-Wang Lee.
Occasional Outbreaks
In the US, 10 confirmed case of Hantavirus infection in people who visited Yosemite National Park in California, US, in November 2012, where reported similarly in 2017, CDC assisted health official in investigating an outbreak of Seoul virus infection that infected 17 people in seven states.
Is Hantavirus is dangerous?
Yes, it is absolutely dangerous but not as Coronavirus, it does not spread from human to humans like coronavirus it mainly spread through rodents or rats. It can be controlled as it's vacations are available. Also, it's research, is on in China.
